“The Abundance Mindset sounds good on paper, but does it really work? The world has limited resources doesn’t it? How can you adopt abundance in everyday life if you have to compete in business and in your career?”
This is what many of my friends tell me whenever I told them I am an “Abundance Life Coach.”
Before I answer the question above, I would like to first explain my own definition of abundance.
It is essentially a BELIEF – a deep conviction that we have more than enough in life to live a purposeful and fulfilling life.
For example, instead of thinking that we don’t have enough time, or money, or opportunities, start with the belief that we definitely have more than enough time, money and opportunities.
Every outcome in our lives starts with a deeply held belief. If we believe that we don’t have enough time or money, we will naturally reject people who need help. We will also end up feeling miserable if we feel that God or the universe is shortchanging us.
If we start with the belief there’s more than enough time and money, then we will become more generous and charitable. Naturally, we also start to feel more joyful and fulfilled, because we can achieve anything we want with the abundant time and money.
So, is it practical in real life?
In late 2013, I lost my job, and for the next 9 months, I couldn’t find a job. During that period, I spent all my hard-earned savings and even had to borrow from my elder brother. It was very challenging to have an abundant mindset during such a time of financial poverty and job search.
One day in 2016, I met a person with cerebral palsy. He was using a wheelchair and needed help to do everything, eg bathing and eating. Yet he was doing charity and writing his own autobiography (using his toe!!).
Meeting him woke me up. I realised that an abundance mindset is the cause of an abundant life, not the effect. That means I could CHOOSE to have an abundance mindset anytime I wanted, and not wait till I found a job.
I immediately made a decision to help him to publish his book and to raise funds for him to pay for daily expenses. During this project, more than 30 strangers volunteered to help me publish his book. Some did the design for free, others helped him create a website to sell the book online.
Within 12 months, we raised nearly $200,000 for him and his family!
This episode proved to me that an abundance mindset can lead to financial abundance too, but it doesn’t take overnight. It can take 12 months or even 12 years.
What does it all mean for you? If you believe in abundance, you will enjoy abundance. If you don’t, then, well, you are right too.
After all, life is a self-fulfilling prophecy. You achieve what you believe.
